In 1992 I was the Assistant Editor on the 1st season of THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW. The day we taped Carol Burnett’s Emmy Winning Comedy Guest Star Appearance the air-conditioner blew out and our Sound Stage became Dante’s Inferno. That’s why they call it Flop Sweat. To keep Ms. Burnett comfy before shooting she was escorted to the only cool place available…the Production ‘Video Village’ Truck.

Video Village

The Big Producer Boss asked if I wouldn’t mind keeping Carol company for an hour or so. Hmmmmmm? In the words of Jack Benny “I’m thinking, I’m thinking!”. Force me to sit with her? No no, don’t make me do it. Oh…okay (what I do for art).

Ms. Burnett was wonderful and funny & we talked about dance and both being in the UCLA Theater Department (many years apart, thank you). Carol later mailed me a “thank you” note for the 1970s TV Guide Magazine featuring her Cover Story that I gave her (which by complete coincidence I just happened to have with me that day…be prepared, says Johnny Cub Scout). Fyi if you’ve ever seen this episode…Carol and Gary Shandling did their entire hilarious slapstick scene in one take.

On my list of ‘regrets…I’ve had a few’..as I walked Ms Burnett back to the set I said without thinking “I’m so glad we had this time together!” Yes I did. Really. “Hello Schtick Police? I’d like to make a Citizen’s Arrest for Star Pandering.”
